Saving the Fourth
You can imagine my surprise when – come 2:00 in the morning – I had no thunderous blasts rattling the window, no debris raining down on the roof. In fact, I didn’t hear anything: no hooting, no whoo-ing, no profanity. Even the hair band music that thumps off the siding of the houses in the cul-de-sac behind us was silenced.

There are a half dozen picnic tables behind the Dari Ripple to seat the approximately fourteen thousand customers. Daniel had picked a flavor called “Blue Moon”; his favorite, he told me (though I didn’t remember him ever ordering it before).

I was working from home and my cell phone started to ring. At the same moment, I could hear the home phone ringing and Meka’s cell phone in her office. I looked at the caller ID and they were all the same phone number. I picked up my cell before it went to voice mail with the assumption the world was ending.

Last January, a tornado dropped out the sky north of us and wiped out the apple orchard we frequent for our Halloween needs. I was upstairs in my office when I heard the sirens come to life. I didn’t waste any time. Daniel was already in the basement.

Devil’s food cake happens to be my favorite store cake flavor and I like vanilla frosting on it. Well, we went to Wal Mart two days running and both times, no chocolate cakes. However, we were there kind of late. The bakery was closed and looked even more picked over than normal.

If I am in a rush, I take the tollway. I pay my $1.30 exit fee and get treated to a display of box stores and construction equipment. Route 76 is the “back way”; it’s not a route that can be taken in a hurry. There is a law of nature that decrees if you have a deadline to meet while traveling up 76, you will end up behind fifteen semi trucks all carrying wide loads. The load itself can be either a yacht in shrink wrap or half a pre-fabricated house, either will suffice to slow you down to a crawl.

Belvidere is – technically – the City of Murals. However, the number of visitors that come specifically to Belvidere for the murals probably equal the number of visitors who go to Casablanca for the waters.
Belvidere – of course – is home to the Belvidere Oasis on the Northwest Tollway. This is how I describe where I live to people not familiar with the area (next time you drive past, wave; that’s basically my backyard).
You Can’t Get There from Here
A policeman tapped on my passenger window and motioned me to turn around. The road was closed until further notice. I gingerly did a three point turn. The Volvo behind me turned less gingerly and ended up doing a double 360 off the side of the road. Luckily, the police were nearby.

It wasn’t until I was in college that I saw thin crust pizza cut up in long triangular wedges. I’m big enough to admit I thought it was a better idea than the squares. I was always an “edge” man anyway; this gave me a much larger slice with a convenient edge to hang onto.

The temperature was just below freezing and the snow was falling in large clods the size of Jurassic mosquitoes. There was no wind and the snow lay fluffy and shining across our lawn and the driveway. I pulled the truck out of the garage and threw it into All Wheel Drive. Some people believe “all wheel drive” is equal to “suction cups on your tires” (those people end up in ditches by the way).

You’d think flag football is the civilized version of the sport. The kids are young, they don’t wear pads. It’s a “learning experience” where kids learn the value of teamwork. It’s run by the YMCA. They don’t even keep score. Well, don’t you believe it.

Belvidere and Rockford East both have long and storied athletic traditions. Both teams have enjoyed greatness and both teams – like this year – have been in a rebuilding mode. In recent memory, the E-rabs have not posed a serious threat to the Bucs. While Belvidere never trailed in last Friday’s game, the E-rabs had enough surprises up their sleeves to keep the outcome in doubt until the very end.

Indians Smash Bucs in Opening Game
It’s a long drive to Rockton from Belvidere. Not many made the trek north to see the Bucs opening game. There were plenty of gaps in the visitor stands. Those that braved the traffic and could manage to find a parking spot didn’t have a lot to cheer about. Down at the half, they could [...]
