Rock ‘n’ Roll Band (1995)

If we’d been in a rock and roll band
With music and rhythm at our command
Filling the kids with the sound and the fury
And giving the grown ups all something to worry
We’d make a record; something quite grand
If we’d been in a rock and roll band

And as the music of our rock and roll band
Peaked on the charts across this great land
Then all of our critics would have nothing to say
And all of the girls we’d hold in our sway

But as time went by for our rock and roll band
Problems would arise we couldn’t understand
Sex and drugs and the other temptations
Along with fights for group domination

So we’d split up our rock and roll band
Maybe we’d quit, or maybe get canned
We’d all vent our spleens, really blast away
(though we’d hint at getting together someday)

But we were never in a rock and roll band
It was just a big dream with some sleight of hand
We weren’t there at Graceland for Elvis to mourn
And the Beatles broke up before we were born
And besides we couldn’t play worth a damn
So much for “what if” and our rock and roll band.
